Welcome to the Tuesday, November 3, 2026 edition. Today’s security brief has an especially sharp twist: the software designed to guard the server became part of the attack path. Then, for a change of pace, we look at a microphone that can make a status update sound polished even when the news is less than ideal.

Security Brief

The irony writes itself. Attackers hijacked the auto-update channel for cPGuard, a Linux server security and firewall suite made by OPSSHIELD, and used it to push a backdoor and data-stealing script. The affected group is server administrators running cPGuard, often on hosting panels. Reports say roughly 2,946 servers were affected between November 2 and November 3, 2026.

Compromised credentials allowed the attackers to distribute the malicious script through cPGuard versions 5.88.12 through 5.88.19. The script installed a backdoor and collected sensitive information, including password hashes, database configuration details, and SSH keys. OPSSHIELD says the attacker also retrieved some of the collected data. An affected-version entry does not, by itself, prove that the script ran or that data left a particular server, but admins should treat any server that installed an affected version as potentially compromised.

Administrators should update cPGuard to version 5.88.25 or later with cpgcli update --start, then confirm the installed version with cpgcli --version. If a server installed an affected version, rotate its passwords, SSH keys, and cloud or database secrets, because credentials copied before cleanup may still work. This matters especially for small businesses: every automatic updater is a trust decision, and a compromised update channel can turn a safety mechanism into the weapon.

The two-minute checklist:

  1. Check your cPGuard version and update history.
  2. Update to version 5.88.25 or later.
  3. Rotate passwords, SSH keys, and cloud or database secrets if an affected version was installed.

Desk Upgrade

After a security incident, there may be a team update to record. The Elgato Wave:3 MK.2 USB Condenser Microphone is a practical first step up from a headset mic for small business owners recording product videos, client calls, or a podcast. It is listed at $134.99 on Amazon, down from a $169.99 list price, a 21% discount. The deal was checked at 6:42 AM ET on November 3, and prices can change at any time. The Amazon listing shows Amazon.com as the seller, while Elgato’s own store still lists it at $169.99.

The Wave:3 MK.2 combines a USB condenser microphone with an onboard Wave FX processor for five DSP effects: EQ, compression, expansion, low-cut, and Voice Tune. The processing runs on the microphone’s hardware rather than adding a CPU load to the computer. Clipguard 2.0 is a multi-stage anti-distortion system designed to keep sudden loud peaks from clipping, while the Auto Gain Wizard helps make setup straightforward.

That mix of clear sound and manageable setup makes this an appealing desk upgrade for creators who want better audio without a complicated recording chain. GamesRadar praised the microphone for balanced, high-quality vocals with a minimum of fuss. And yes, Clipguard means a surprise sneeze is less likely to ruin the take. After rotating server credentials, a clean-sounding status update to the team is a welcome bonus.

There are tradeoffs to keep in mind: reviewers note that the touch-mute button can be sensitive enough to trigger accidentally, the microphone’s body is plastic rather than metal, and its noise filtering may sound aggressive. The deal roundup reported a 4.7-star rating from 10,401 reviews at the time of its check; ratings and prices can change. For a compact USB setup focused on speech, however, the combination of onboard processing, gain assistance, and clipping protection can make recording and calls more consistent.
