Security Brief

Treat CVE-2026-111497 as a crucial patching priority: CISA added the critical Brotli decoder flaw to its Known Exploited Vulnerabilities catalog on October 28, 2026, and public proof-of-concept exploits raise the urgency for organizations running affected software. Also called Node2Shell, Broccoli2Shell, and HTTP2Shell, the flaw is an out-of-bounds write, or buffer overflow, in Google’s Brotli decoder. An invalid block switch is mistakenly reported as a temporary need for more input rather than a permanent format error, so the streaming decoder continues appending bytes to an eight-byte internal buffer and can overwrite adjacent memory. A crafted Brotli-compressed stream can crash a process, expose memory, and potentially enable remote code execution. The flaw first drew attention in Node.js, but it can also affect HTTP servers and clients across ecosystems, including Python applications using packages such as urllib3[brotli], requests, httpx, or aiohttp[speedups] when they rely on vulnerable Brotli decoders. Microsoft issued an emergency .NET update on Sunday, October 25, warning of privilege-escalation risk. Vulnerable Brotli releases include versions 1.0.3 through 1.0.9, plus 1.1.0 and 1.2.0; patched upstream releases are 1.0.10, 1.1.1, and 1.2.1, with fixes also available in Node.js 22.23.4, 24.22.1, and 26.12.1, Python Brotli 1.2.1, and brotlicffi 1.2.1.0. The fixes were committed in February, stable releases became available October 21, and PyPI packages followed October 23. CISA’s Binding Operational Directive 26-04 sets a November 10 patch deadline for federal agencies, while all network defenders should prioritize updates. If immediate patching is not possible, remove Brotli support from Python applications and block incoming Brotli-compressed requests at the proxy or firewall, recognizing that these are temporary measures: blocking inbound requests does not close the separate route involving a malicious compressed HTTP response. Updating the system Brotli library alone may also leave bundled copies inside Node.js applications untouched. After applying the correct vendor or dependency patch, restart affected processes and rebuild and redeploy container images rather than relying on a host update or simply pulling an image. For small businesses, the practical takeaway is straightforward: inventory runtimes, dependencies, and containers, then make server patching and restart checks a scheduled routine. Desk Upgrade

For a budget remote-work or student laptop, PCWorld reports the Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 5i 16-inch at $800 from B&H, reduced from $1,450-a $650 discount. The reported offer is B&H-only and ends Saturday, October 31, 2026, at 11:59 PM ET, so check the B&H listing for current price and availability before buying. The configuration pairs a 16-inch 1920×1200 display with 16GB of DDR5 memory and 1TB of M.2 storage, offering useful screen space and capacity for everyday work. Its entry-level six-core Intel Core Ultra 5 and Windows 11 are suited to browsing, streaming, school tasks, email, and remote-work applications, while a webcam with Windows Hello facial recognition supports convenient sign-in. Two USB-C ports with up to 100W power delivery, Wi-Fi 7, and Bluetooth 5.4 add practical flexibility for a work setup. Set expectations around performance: this model has no dedicated GPU, and its Core Ultra 5 is not designed for gaming or heavy creative workloads. For everyday productivity, however, the combination of memory, storage, and a spacious display makes the price compelling, particularly as AI-driven hardware shortages have pushed PC part prices higher. The deal is a timely value for students and remote workers who need a straightforward Windows laptop rather than a graphics workstation. See PCWorld’s deal report for its full coverage.
